About Us
Family run for 40 years…
In 1976 John and Stephanie Benson purchased a piece of land in Grayshott to start growing a range of soft fruit and vegetables. Selling via a barrow at the entrance and a van to Covent Garden Market, John steadily built up a pick your own business which thrived throughout the 1980’s.
Today Applegarth employs about 32 people and has a thriving Restaurant and Farm Shop selling a whole raft of locally sourced, unique products. We are still true to our roots however, trying to break the mould of faceless high street shopping by providing a personal and unique location.
Childrens play area
Applegarth has a children’s pet’s corner and play area with plenty of seating to eat out in this area. It currently houses a family of renegade guinea pigs, chickens and rabbits. There is a tree house with slide and a grassed area to sit and chill with the little ones.
In the field opposite and easily accessible are ponies and Ethiopian pygmy goats.
Restaurant
The restaurant itself can accommodate 60 people in the winter and 120 in the summer with the outside terraced area.
Our head chef produces a range of exceptional foods for both the restaurant and deli counter. We also offer an afternoon tea to die for or big, proper sponge cakes and other pastries, all made in the kitchens.
Our Sunday Roasts are exceptional as are our evenings. A strange concept to the uninitiated but our night time offering is better than anything you can find in the area. Rest assured, you will not be disappointed with your visit.
Farmshop main
The power house of the Farm Shop is the deli counter and kitchen behind. We have a full time, classically trained cook producing a range of ready meals, puddings, quiches pies and tarts. Coupled with the charcuterie and delicatessen area this four metre counter serves up some seriously good foods. The rest of the shop is shelved with a considerable selection of produce.
Fruit and veg, sourced the old way from Covent Garden market is a strong part of the shop as are the home made breads, baked fresh every morning. Oh, and the considerable number of small, artisan producers that deliver there delicious goods to our doors adorn the rest of the shop. If you're looking for mass produced, then don’t look here!
Retail cabins
We have 3 Nordic cabins in the garden centre area at the front of the shop. In them, we have some seriously good little companies selling small, hand made artisan home and giftware, including beautiful pieces of original art produced by Alison Orchard and bespoke furniture made to order by Patricia Alban. Both these very talented ladies also run workshops where you can learn some of the tricks of the trade from their respective areas.
